The Wey Chieftain

One of the top sea-angling boats moored in the Marina of Cahersiveen.
This boat is part of the program of ActiveHolidaysKerry. Marina Cahersiveen is the base of all fishing trips. Our booking office in on this place.
Adrian Hanley is an excellent angler as well as skipper. He'll surely find the best spots to fish, depending the tides and the weather conditions.

Competition on Cahersiveen SAC 22th of August 2010

A nice day for fishing.

Only 9 anglers, registered for this boat-angling competition got a really good fishing day on the Fuego with Des Connell as skipper. Good sunshine, great angling conditions on the Valentia Coast. At the beginning, we headed for Beenanillar Head on Valentia Coast for a pollack session. During the afternoon, we moved to the Wireless Point for great Ling, Cod, Haddock and Whiting fishing. 11 species have been caught over this day for 224 fish.
At the end, Barry Spink won the match with the great score of 391 points followed by Johnny Griffin with 389 points.

A very pleasant day.

Sunday 8th of August 2010

A nice Sunday angling trip to the 22-Mile Bank

organized by Cahersiveen SAC.
This special trip to the 22-Mile Bank on Anchorsiveen with Huge Maguire as skipper has been done under good fishing conditions. A trip with the Blue Mouth as target. Around 120 Blue Mouth on this trip, with 3 specimen fish. Some good cods until 8lbs and some nice pollack. Other fish like Cuckoo, some coalies, some medium sized ling were on this party. Lot's of dolphins and some jumping whales have been seen.
Really a enjoyable day.
In the hope to get some more days like this one.

The long August weekend 30th and 31st of July and 1st of August

A great angling weekend with lots of fish

CahersiveenSeaAnglingClub held his angling festival this weekend. On Friday 30th, we had a conger competition. In the evening, the traditional "Bridge fishing" for the kids and on Saturday and Sunday, the big angling competition. There were reasonable to good weather conditions and there were great results.
Friday (conger competition) (the whole day at anchor)
2 boats on this competition: the Heather Valley and the Mary Caroline. The first boat fished the Valentia Coast, the second one went on a long trip to the Wild Bank. A long trip, who didn't really pay out.
3rd in this competition was Padraigh Clear with 6 congers
2nd in this competition was Barry Spink with 6 congers
winner of this competition was P.J. Donovan with 7 congers

Some excellent congers were caught over this day, with one fish of 36lbs.
Friday (bridge fishing) (between 7PM and 8PM)
This was a huge success with 33 kids in action. Was organized by Cahersiveen Festival Committee and Cahersiveen Sea Angling Club.
256 fish were caught from the kids, mainly small pollacks and poutings, but there were some small herrings!!!, 1 trigger fish and 1 wrasse.
At the end, Emily Loftus was the great winner with 42 fish.

Saturday and Sunday (the big competition)
3 boats were involved in this competition. Mary Francis with Nealie Lyne as skipper, Anchorsiveen with Huge McGuire as skipper and Fuego with Des O'Connoll as skipper. Lots of discussions about where to go. Going to the Wild Bank, same as we did for the 50th anniversary, where huge results came from there, or simply staying this side of the bay on the fishing grounds of the Valentia Coast. Decision was taken to stay this side, and we fished both days the Coast of Valentia. Mary Francis had 2 average days, Anchorsiveen with a bad first day finished with a great day and Fuego had 2 great fishing days.

After the fantastic score of 781 points, realized by 3-time European Champion Heiko Dreier on the Wild Bank during the 50th anniversary weekend, we have now 2 new best marks on the Coast of Valentia, which gives an end to all speculations that there isn't any fish there.

Munster Closed boat in Cahersiveen, Saturday 3rd of July

Cahirciveen Sea Angling Club hosted the Munster closed boat last Sat. in poor conditions around Beiginis island. 42 anglers took to sea in 6 boats with the 5 places for the Munster team up for grabs.Fishing was varied and diverse and the skippers had to pull anchor and move several times during the day to find fish. Dogfish,bullhuss,pollack,

wrasse,ray and dab were the primary species caught and returned alive. The team to represent Munster next year:5th Pio Enright Kinsale 166 pts, 4th Al B Sullivan 175pts Ballycotton, 3rd Johnny Griffin 195pts Cahirciveen, 2nd John Cronin 208pts Ardmore and Tony Santry 261pts Anglesea. Many thanks to the skippers who worked really hard to find fish and the Kerry Coast Inn who sponsored and hosted the prizegiving. Fri July 30th: Bridge fishing competition 6.30pm to 8.00pm. Entry fee 5eu. Check in at festival office all day. This competition is confined to kids under 16. Kids under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Use size 4 or 6 hooks with small bits of mackrel or live worms.

Fri July 30th: Boat angling Conger hunt competition. This is a return to the traditional fishing of the 80s and 90s when North of Valentia became famous for these monsters of the deep. The Irish record conger at 72lbs was caught at this venue in 1914 and if it is to be broken this is the venue. The local skippers have put up a bounty of 1000eu for anyone who topples the record during the weekend.

Sat,Sun July31 Aug1. This is our 2day International event with up to 50 anglers competing annually. This year the scorecard is designed with the emphasis on species hunting
rather than big fish with cod,pollack,wrasse,pouting,

Cahersiveen Sea Angling Club (5oth anniversary competition 5th and 6th of June 2010)

Great weather conditions, superb fishing, an unbelievable score.

During this 2-day boat-angling competition, great angling has been experienced.
Different skippers, different tactics.
The first day, mostly all the boats headed for the "Wild Bank" just in front of the Blasket Islands. Despite, one boat went for the 22-mile bank, trying to get Blue Mouth in the competition, which finally paid out. Another boat headed for the 4-mile bank, which didn't really paid out, as the Wild Bank fished excellent.
On the second day, all boats headed for the wild bank.

In the Friday event of this 50th anniversary, old members of CahirsiveenSAC met for a superbe fishing party under excellent conditions. A good amount of pollacks, codlings, coalies and some ling have been caught.
John Kelly, one of the longest serving members of the club got a nice ling 15lbs during this friday competition.

Boat angling competition on Sunday September 13th

After being reportet twice because of very bad weather conditions, Cahirciveen Sea Angling Club hosted a fishing competition on Sunday September 13th.
The Anchorciveen and the Eileen left Cahirciveen early to avail of the fine weather and exceptional sea conditions.The Eileen skippered by "Long " John Riordan fished a mark 12 miles NW of the Skelligs,while the Anchorsiveen skippered by Hugh Maguire fished a similar mark 6 milesNW of the Skelligs. A bumper days fishing was had by all with the Anchorsiveen boating 36 ling to 18lbs and the Eileen boating over 80 bluemouth haddock.
John Riordan recorded a specimen bluemouth haddock of 2lb 3ozs caught on baited hokkies.
Total recorded catch was Cod 1. Ling 38. Pollack 159. Coalfish 17. Garfish 2. Cuckoo wrasse 14. Ballan wrasse 1. Pouting 9. Haddock 1. Bluemouth Haddock 89. from 13 anglers.
Competition results were as follows:

An excellent score was done by our junior Pol Clees who scored 233pts and with the best ling.

Cahersiveen Sea Angling Club competition Sunday 16th of August (Open)

Our club had a competition North of Valentia on 16th of August. A very blustery day with a flood-ebb tide.
15 competitors in this competition on 2 boats. The Anchorsiveen from Hugh Maguire as well as the Eileen for John Riordan. The anglers came from 4 different clubs and a total of 152 fish were caught.
Finally in the evening, the results were as follows:
3rd in competition: Josh Corbett with 179 points
2nd in competition: Johnny Griffin with 229 points
Winner of the competition was Des Connell with 256 points

Cahersiveen hosts the RAI (Recreational Angling Ireland) on the 8th and 10th of August 2009

Junior Day 2009

What is the value of a club without the juniors? I ask you all.
Well, it looks after this great event, that this ins't a question for our angling club. Great instruction followed by 2 days angling showed a huge interest in angling.
RAI proved to be absolutely the leading instance in the matter in Ireland. Angling instructors from Cahersiveen Sea Angling Club helped by some top anglers did a great job in preparing the juniors for these 2 days.

The Paddy Fear Fishing Competition on Sunday 31st of May

Cahersiveen SAC fished a competition on Sunday May 31st in great
conditions North of Valentia.

13 anglers took to Sea in two boats.
John Riordan & Co fished somewhere West of the Skelligs while the Wey Chieftain stayed local off Culloo. Average fishing was recorded with 1st and 2nd Des Connell 209pts and Barry Spinks 139pts fishing in John Riordan boat, the revamped Eileen. Johnny Griffin was 3rd on the Wey Chieftain with 135pts.
The highlight of the day was a 40lbs+ conger eel, caught by well known big game fish hunter Heinz Peters of Killarney.

44th worldchampionship in The Netherlands

Very difficult to fish against the countries, who know exactly what happens here. In short words, this was the situation.
Netherlands are the new world-champions, followed by Belgium and France in 3rd position.
Now, what happens with the "great nations"??
Italy!! United Kingdom!!
Ireland finished in 4th position with our club member Heiko Dreier in 13th position. Another Irish angler did 9th position.
I think, this is a great achievement under such circumstances.
Congratulations to our member of Cahersiveen SAC and to the whole Irish team.

Cahirsiveen Sea Angling Club competition August 30th 2008

We fished this competition under very poor weather conditions (as usual this season).
2 boats were out for this competition. John Riordan's boat on the "four mile bank" and the "Mary Carolin" in the region of Coonaana. One side, mainly anchor-fishing for conger, on the other side, at anchor trying to get flatties followed by a second anchor session, trying to get conger.
On the first boat, fishing wasn't great, on the second boat, it was disastrous.
Here the results of a day, you can't qualify as glorious.

No Gold in the Olympics, but Gold in the European Championships!!!

Heiko Dreier, a member of Cahersiveen Sea Angling Club, wins the European Championships for the 3rd time in succession last week in Cobh.
This is a truly remarkable feat, Norway 2006, England 2007, Ireland 2008. Fishing against 180 anglers from 17 different countries each year, Heiko has managed to out fish and out think the best, Europe has to offer. After 3 days of intense angling in Cobh, it all came down to the last 15mins. Heiko 26 points down at this stage, managed to catch a ling and a pouting, giving him 27 points and Gold for Ireland.
He now goes to the World Championship in the Netherlands in October with a great chance to win the title.

This junior day, August 11th 2008, in Cahersiveen, organized by RAI (Recreational Angling Ireland)

The future for Irish angling!!!
RAI, (Recreational Angling Ireland) is the best example, how to promote this fantastic sport by the youngsters.
Once per year, Cahersiveen Sea Angling Club contributes to this special event, event organized by RAI.
Paddy Byrne from Central Fisheries Board was here in Cahersiveen for this event.
Despite very poor wheather conditions, it was a great day with lot's of fun and some very good fish. The juniors could experience angling under bad weather conditions. Something important for their angling-career. Not every day can be bright and sunny.
Everybody survived it and in the afternoon, we had an enjoyable warm meal in the Anchor Bar, where the prize-giving took place.
We would like to thank Paddy Byrne from Central Fisheries Board and representative for RAI, to assist us on our way to promote the angling for a next generation of anglers.

A historical "Blue Mouth" trip in Cahersiveen

On Friday, August 8th 2008, 6 anglers on the famous bluemouth-haddock hunter boat "the Anchorsiveen" set out from Cahirsiveen Marina to fish a new mark 8 miles North-West of the Skelligs.
2 weeks earlier, the Irish record for bluemouth, held by skipper Hugh Maguire of the Anchorsiveen fell to Tony Taite of Cork. This record of 2lbs 8oz hold for 6 years and Hugh Maguire was eager to bring the acclaim back to Kerry.
On the boat were George McCollough, Paddy Loftus, Johnny Griffin, Huge Maguire, Ken Hegarty and Denis "the Specimen" O'Shea. Fishing depths from 100 to 150meters, the mark yielded a huge amount of fish. Over 200 bluemouth, alas, no Irish record. However, all was not in vain as Ken Hegarty caught a specimen of 2lbs 6oz and Denis O'Shea got his second specimen bluemouth of 2lbs 3oz.
Denis now has 2 trips and 2 specimens to his credit. He revealed his secret on the way home. He noticed that the larger fish went for whole crab baits, shell included.
He now plans to write a book on the subject.
Meanwhile, Maguire (skipper) has vowed, that the record will fall by the end of the year.

3-Days International 2008 in Cahersiveen, August 1st, 2nd and 3rd. (Sea-Angling event of the season)

This long angling weekend was a great event:
1) In the team event, there were 2 great teams battling for the first place. At the end, only 1 small point made the difference.
1705 points for the winner, 1704 for the second place. This gives us lot of informations about the quality of the match.
2) In the individuals, we had a great winner.
Shay McDonald was 1st with 786 points
Johnny Griffin was 2nd with 532 points
254 points difference between a first and a second.
Shay McDonald is a great winner.
3) In the species of the weekend:
2 different species of rays, (thornback and spotted), David O'Donoghue broke after 15 minutes fight on a very big skate,
2 turbots, some dabs, an excellent 13lbs bull-huss, some codlings, lots of poutings, some good lings, lots of pollacks, a very good haddock around 3 1/2lbs, some whitings, 1 scad, lots of Cuckoo Wrasse, some excellent Ballan Wrasse (one not far away from the specimen), some excellent red gurnard (probably 2 specimen fish), some grey gurnard, good conger fishing, some dog-fish, all the mackerels and a pilchard.
We are speaking from 20 different species.

If you consider the wheather conditions, the very strong tides coming in (the biggest of the year), I think that these are great results and that we had a succesful and enjoyable angling event.

It was a great species hunt with very interesting species being caught ie. there were some turbots, some dabs, some interesting rays, and there was a pilchard caught on the feathers. This competition was a success.

Lot's of questions about baits, about tackle, about the different species in these strange weather conditions. When you see, what happens for the moment!!!
Very hard to catch serious mackrel for baits, the fish ins't there. What happens? Big tides coming in.

Programmme of events for Aug weekend

Thursday 31st:
This year, we have a new addition to our regular programme in that we want to cater for the pleasure angler on Thursday evening. 2 hours of mackrel and pollack fishing for adults and teenager at "Wireless point" of Valentia should tee off the weekend nicely. Anglers are advised to bring mackrel feathers, 8oz leads and rods if possible. Booking at the festival office (Old Library) from Monday onwards. Fishing fee is 25€/person and is opened to everyone.

Friday 1st:
We have our old favorite for the kids - "the Bridge fishing competition". This year the fishing times will be: from 3.30PM to 5.00PM. Fishing with not more than 3 hooks, small hooks and small baits work best. Booking at the festival office up to 3.15PM on the day. Fishing fee 5€ (under 16 only).

Friday 1st:
Cahirsiveen Sea Angling Club host the first day of its 3-Day International fishing program. This year on Friday, we have a species competition (boat). No more than 3 hooks and all types of bait allowed. Boats depart Marina at 10.00AM and return before 6.00PM. Fishing fee 50€/person. Details and entry.

Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd:
This is our annual 2-day All Tackle International event. Fishing may be at anchor or drift with big fish ie. conger, ling and skate usually targeted. This is competition angling at it's best with large fish and a huge variety of species landed each year. This competition is open to all, but your own tackle and a bit of experience is advised. The weekend is rounded off with the prize giving ceremony in the Daniel O'Connel hotel at 9.00PM. Fishing fee 50€/day. Boats depart Marina at 10.00AM and return before 6.00PM

Cahersiveen S.A.C. club competition July 13th

C.S.A.C. fished a competition on Sun July 13th. Two boats and 13 anglers fished soft misty conditions and a good return of fish was reported. The "Nokkia" fished a mark called the "Wild Bank" near the Blaskets while "La Gem" fished North of Culloo Rock. "La Gem" had the bigger fish while the "Nokkia" had greater numbers. 172 fish were recorded caught and most returned alive.

The results were as follows:

Winner: David O'Donoghue with 329 points (20 fish)
2nd: Barry Spinks with 304 points (17 fish)
3rd: Johnny Griffin with 268 points (39 fish)
4th: Des Connel with 268 points (17 fish)

Cork Harbour Championship 6th of July

Sea-angling competition of Cahersiveen Sea Angling Club, Saturday 21th of June

It was like "Star Treck" !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rain, rain and more rain.
We bravely went, where no man has gone before.
Almost on top of the rocks on the Black Island of North of Valentia. It really was a bad day.
Conger angling wasn't good. The big points of the day went to ling, some up to 15lbs.

The results of this day:

Winner of competition: Des Connell with 320 points
2nd in competition: David O'Donoghue with 305 points
3rd in competition: Liam Walsh with 244 points

The "Kaiser" strikes again

On Saturday/Sunday June 14th and 15th, EFSA Ireland hosted a boat angling competition out of Cobh, Co Cork.
57 angler fished both days with Cahersiveen anglers Heiko Dreier and Des Connell participating. Once again, "Von Dreier" showed why he is European Champion. Using the 16foot long Tubertini rod like a rapier and casting up to 100 yards from the boat, he won his sectors comfortably on Saturday and Sunday.
On Sunday, he put up an incredible score on the Ling rocks, which made him overall winner for the weekend.
Des Connell fished well on Saturday and won his sector on Sunday, finishing in the top 5 overall.

Munster Open Boat 14th of June, organized by Valentia Sea and Shore Angling Club

Cahersiveen had engaged 2 teams in this big competition. Absolutely perfect wheather conditions brought an incredible result. Nearly 200 congers caught for 49 anglers.
A great Kinsale team won the match with 1408 points.
Cahersiveen SAC got 3rd place after this Kinsale team and Anglsea team.
In individual, Dave Finnegan won the match with unbelievable 538 points. There were 5 anglers over this magic 400 points.
Best Cahersiveen SAC angler was Derry Fitzgerald with 375 points in 8th position.

Barry Spinks had a conger in this competition, not far away from specimen which is at 40lbs.

A great competion on a great site.

Specimen hunt on 7th of June 2008 in Cahirsiveen

On Saturday June 7th, 3 members of the Cahirsiveen SAC and 4 friends from Cork went on a fishing expedition, 5 miles North-west of Skellig Michael, not far away from Forida!!!
in search of the elusive Blue mouth "haddock".
Fishing in depts ranging from 80 to 120 meters, huge catches of pollack and ling were recorded. 240 pollack to 9lbs, 37 ling to 16lbs, numerous cuckoo wrasse and pouting and finally at 3.47PM the first bluemouth was brought to the surface by CSAC member Johnny Griffin. Skipper Hugh Maguire on the Anchorsiveen decided to change tactics late in the day and fish deeper water than we normally would find the Bluemouth.
Seven more bluemouth were brought to the surface during the next hour from depts of 100-120 meters.
The second last fish, caught by Denis O'Shea "Bubbles" weighed in at 2lbs 30z and has since been certified as a specimen. Pity, we did'nt fish deeper earlier in the day.
The previous trip last Oct yielded 32 bluemouth including 1 specimen and a specimen garfish.
The Irish record stands at 2lbs 50z held by Hugh Maguire of the Anchorsiveen.

Cahirsiveen S.A.C. fished a competition North of Valentia in excellent conditions on Sun June 1st. Eighteen anglers landed of 220 fish with a good catch of conger and ling recorded.

The results were as follows:
